The Grand Priory of the Mediterranean
In May 2002, the first investitures of the Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem were carried out in the Mediterranean region. Throughout the seven years between the years 2002 and 2009, seventeen investitures were carried out under the auspices of the Grand Priory of the Mediterranean of the Order of Saint Lazarus. These investitures were held in Malta, Gozo, Greece, Sicily and France.
The Grand Priory of the Mediterranean, led by its Grand Prior, the Most Reverend Monsignor Anton Gauci ECLJ CMLJ and its Chancellor, Chev. Massimo J Ellul GCLJ GCMLJ ensured the smooth growth of the Order in the Mediterranean region and included Delegations, Commanderies and Grand Commanderies in Malta, Gozo, Sicily, Italy, France, Libya, Greece, Spain and Portugal.
In 2009, the Supreme Grand Priory of the Order unanimously decided that the growth of the Order in this region was such that it entailed the creation and consecration of independent Grand Priories responsible for their specific regions and which emanated from the mentioned Grand Priory of the Mediterranean.
During 2010, the Supreme Grand Priory of the Order sanctioned the establishment of the following independent Grand Priories and Grand Commanderies:
The Grand Priory of Malta (consecrated in April 2010)
The Grand Priory of Gozo (consecrated in April 2010)
The Grand Priory of Italy (consecrated in April 2010)
The Grand Priory of Sicily (consecrated in October 2010)
The Grand Commandery of France, which was constituted in October 2007, was retained as a Grand Commandery.
The Grand Commandery of de L’Isle-Adam, which was responsible for delegates from outside the Mediterranean region, was elevated and consecrated in April 2010 as the Grand Priory of the International Lazarites, with jurisdiction in all the territories where the Order operates with a representation of the Order grouped by means of Delegations of the Order or Commanderies of the Order. Hence, the Commandery of Tripolitania and the Delegations of Portugal and Spain were transferred to the administrative responsibility of the Grand Priory of the International Lazarites.
The Supreme Grand Priory wishes to publicly acknowledge and thank the extremely fruitful work of all the Officers of the mentioned Grand Priory of the Mediterranean and congratulate them in their new offices and roles in the newly set up Grand Priories. It is indeed an understatement to agree to the fact that the hard work of the Grand Priory of the Mediterranean was indeed instrumental in the orderly and professional growth of the Order of Saint Lazarus throughout these last years.
